Abstract

The need for energy will continue to increase every year in line with the increasing population, dynamic economic conditions, and energy consumption itself. In contrast to fossil energy, which turns out to be unable to keep up with the increase in industry and socio-economic class in society. With this condition, it is necessary to use environmentally friendly alternative energy sources, one of which is wind energy. Indonesia is an archipelagic country that has a wide stretch of coast. The winds found on the coast are quite high, but areas other than the coast have winds with a low average speed. Vertical type wind turbines can be a solution to low wind speeds. Therefore, in this study, a vertical type Savonius wind turbine model was tested by varying the depth of the main blade. Variations in the depth of the main blade used in this study are 35 mm, 40 mm and 45 mm. This test is adjusted to wind conditions with low speed, using the wind tunnel that has been provided. This test was carried out in A8 Building 4th floor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, State University of Surabaya. This test is used to prove the effect of the main blade depth on the Savonius vertical wind turbine on power and efficiency. In this test, the Savonius wind turbine showed that the maximum power was obtained at a speed of 6 m/s with a load of 2000 grams of 1.44 watts and the maximum efficiency of the wind turbine was 12.09% using a variation of the blade depth of 45 mm.
