Abstract

The double pipe heat exchanger is the simplest yet widely used heat exchanger. The use of helical fins on the double pipe heat exchanger aims to cause turbulent flow on the outer pipe side. This study aims to determine the effect of helical fin pitch on the pressure drop of double pipe heat exchanger. Therefore, further research is needed on the different helical fin pitches to the pressure drop of the double pipe heat exchanger. The research method used is numerical simulation using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamic) software, namely ANSYS Fluent R19.2 by varying the helical fin pitch. different, namely: 20 mm, 30 mm, and 40 mm. The modeling used is a three-dimensional (3D) model using the Autodesk Inventor 2019 software. In fluent 3D steady flow modeling is used by activating the energy equation and selecting k-ε (k-epsilon) RNG enhanced wall treatment as the viscous model. The output of this research is presented qualitatively in the form of contour visualization, graphs, and tables and then analyzed to determine the effect of different helical fin pitches on the pressure drop of the double pipe heat exchanger. From the results of the study, the pressure drop values were 906,29 Pa, 331,10 Pa, and 198,26 Pa for each variation of the helical fin pitch of 20 mm, 30 mm, and 40 mm.
