Abstract

The production of hoe blades in home industries still uses many inappropriate tools. Often the hoe blades
made by blacksmiths are cracked or broken on the blade, so farmers often have to replace them with new
blades. The method used in this study was an experiment with the aim of improving the quality of hoe
materials using ASTM A36 steel through a hardening process by varying the heating temperature. The
temperature variations used were 920 ° C, 940 ° C and 960 ° C, and using salt water as a cooling medium.
The results of this study indicate that untreated specimens have an average hardness value of 17.88 HRC, then a temperature variation of 920 ° C obtained an average hardness value of 24.08 HRC. Then a temperature variation of 940 ° C obtained an average hardness value of 27.09 HRC. Then the temperature variation of 960°C obtained an average hardness value of 29.99 HRC. Then for the impact test showed that the specimen without treatment had an average toughness value of 0.52 joules / mm2, Then the temperature variation of 920°C obtained an average toughness value of 0.47 joules / mm2. Then the temperature variation of 940°C obtained an average toughness value of 0.33 Joule / mm2. Then the temperature variation of 960°C obtained an average toughness value of 0.23 Joule / mm2.
