Abstract

Manufacturing in the shipping sector is an industry that uses a lot of welding because it is easy to use and produces strong joints. Welding the ship's hull uses the SMAW method, but the weld produced is still lacking the required ductility which causes the ship's hull to become more prone to cracks or leaks in the ship's hull. Welding on ASTM A36 steel, using the FCAW (Flux-Cord Arc Welding) welding method with a variety of cement and silica sand based backing plates, carried out tensile tests and bending tests. The results of this research show a significant influence on the results of ASTM A36 steel welding backing plate variations. The tensile test shows that the variation (30% cement-70% sand) has an average tensile test value of 408.43 MPa, the variation (70% cement-30% sand) has an average tensile test value of 517.99 MPa, the variation (100% cement-0 sand) has an average tensile test value of 487.38 MPa, the variation (50% cement-50% sand) has the highest average tensile test value of 576.48 MPa. The bending test shows that the variation (30% cement-70% sand) has an average bending test value of 1881.6 MPa, the variation (70% cement-30% sand) has an average bending test value of 2417.46 MPa, variation (100% cement-0% sand) has an average bending test value of 2089.19 MPa, the variation (50% cement-50% sand) has the highest average bending test value of 2621.88 MPa.
