Abstract

The background of this research was motivated by the existence of a pandemic situation that gave rise to regulations that could make it vulnerable to living a sedentary lifestyle so that it could have a negative impact on health. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between body mass index and the ability of postural balance and flexibility in the categories of body mass index, namely ideal weight (BI), overweight (KB) and obesity (O) in school adolescents. The research design used a cross-sectional study which was conducted on 30 school adolescents including 16 boys and 14 girls aged 12-17 years. The Y-balance test is used to test for postural balance and the YMCA's sit-and-reach test for flexibility. The results of the postural balance test for adolescents in category O with a mean of 84.46 (cm) were significantly different from the BI category with a mean of 92.28 and KB with a mean of 91.68 in the right anterior reach (AT) (P= 0.031), but no difference was found between BI with a mean of 45.8 and KB with a mean of 45.5. Flexibility test scores for category O adolescents with a mean of 31.9 (cm) also showed a significant difference with the BI and KB categories (P = 0.001). No correlation was produced between BMI, postural balance, and flexibility. This study implies that an increase in BMI can reduce balance ability in the anterior direction range but not in the other direction. Increasing BMI can also reduce flexibility capabilities. Adolescents who are obese are more prone to falling because of their lack of balance. The conclusion of this study is that there is no correlation between the three variables and the increase in BMI can affect the lack of balance ability in achieving the anterior direction range and can reduce flexibility ability.
