Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the usage of politeness strategies performed by main male and female characters in Bridgerton’s Netflix Series (2020) while dealing with romantic conflicts. The aims of this present study are at identifying the types of politeness strategies employed by main male and female characters in Briedgerton’s Netflix Series (2020) and revealing politeness strategies impact romantic conflicts of main male and female characters in Bridgerton’s Netflix series (2020). In order to conduct this study, this study adapted theory of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) and conflict resolution strategies as proposed by Sillars et al (1983). The method applied was a descriptive qualitative method since the data were in the forms of utterances and being identified descriptively based on the theory adapted. This recent study found that all types of politeness strategies employed by main male and female characters in Bridgerton’s Netflix series (2020) while dealing with romantic conflicts. This research revealed that there are differences regarding Simon and Daphne applying types of politeness strategies. Other than that, positive politeness is mostly employed to actualize cooperative strategy in dealing with romantic conflicts. Furthermore, in applying competitive strategy in dealing with romantic conflict, main male and female characters preferred adapting off-record. The least strategy in solving romantic conflicts used by main male and female characters is that avoidance strategy. This strategy can be done with mostly negative politeness
2024-06-11T09:12:00+00:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://ejournal.unesa.ac.id/index.php/language-horizon/article/view/60289 INVESTIGATING NETSPEAK APPLIED IN YOUTH INTERACTION IN X BASE ACCOUNT: WORD FORMATION ANALYSIS 2024-06-25T04:50:29+00:00 Intan Marta Puspitasari intanmarta.20008@mhs.unesa.ac.id
In this modern era, the youth actively engage with social media, and they may use abbreviations, slang, and code-mixing to have online texting. This study examines netspeak used by youth in X base accounts. The type of this study is qualitative. The data was collected from various tweets in the @convomf and @tanyarl X accounts for a month. The result shows 102 data on netspeak coming from various forms based on the word formation perspective. This study revealed that one data may involve more than one word formation process, so it can be analyzed in multiple forms. The most common form was an abbreviation, including an acronym inside because the youth love to type less and minimize the words used while sending messages. It deals with the rules of X that the users can only send messages in 1-40 characters through a tweet. However, using acronyms, such as wta and cmiiw, were typed improperly because they used lowercase. Since they use online texting informally, they do not need to pay attention to the formal grammatical rules. Apart from the most common data found, the least data found is the adjectival compound. In the process of adjectival compound, young people may experience difficulties in combining adjectives as the head with other categories as modifiers to create new meanings.

Keywords: word formation, netspeak, X.

2024-04-30T00:00:00+00:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://ejournal.unesa.ac.id/index.php/language-horizon/article/view/60958 LEXICAL DENSITY OF NURSERY RHYMES IN TRANSLATION FROM ENGLISH INTO INDONESIAN 2024-06-25T04:51:40+00:00 Syafa Nameyra Eka Nofitri syafa.22050@mhs.unesa.ac.id Susi Laksmita Pratiwi susi.22047@mhs.unesa.ac.id Yohana Delphia Hutauruk yohana.22081@mhs.unesa.ac.id
Cocomelon is a popular animated series for kids with billions of viewers on YouTube, filled with fun songs and stories
that both entertain and teach. On February 24, 2022, Vladimir Putin delivered a speech that justified a “special military operation” in Ukraine. Putin’s communication often fails to adhere to or intentionally deviates from typical norms of politeness. The study aims to analyze politeness strategies in Vladimir Putin’s speech on the Russian-Ukraine conflict in 2022. It employed a qualitative approach and applies politeness theory for analysis. The results revealed that Vladimir Putin employed bald-on-record, positive, negative, and off-record politeness strategies, which are divided into several variations of specific strategies. Bald-on-record is the most frequently used, followed by positive and negative, with off-record politeness being the least frequently used strategy. The bald-on-record strategy dominated Putin’s speech because he wanted to increase his efficiency in communicating rather than being long-winded and minimizing face-threatening acts (FTAs). He also had much higher power than his audience, which allowed him to give orders, commands, decisions, and even threats to his audience or political opponents.

Keywords: politeness strategy, Vladimir Putin, political speech, Russian-Ukraine war.

2024-06-14T09:03:56+00:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://ejournal.unesa.ac.id/index.php/language-horizon/article/view/60290 REVEALING LANGUAGE CHOICES IN INSTAGRAM ADS FOR LOCAL BEAUTY BRANDS BILINGUALISM PERSPECTIVE 2024-06-25T04:20:20+00:00 Lilin Juliati lilinjuliati.20024@mhs.unesa.ac.id
Instagram has now become a fascinating channel for promoting and marketing items. Each business found ways to adopt an array of methods to make its marketing engaging. Nevertheless, in terms of their language choice, this study examines language choice within bilingual Instagram ads, notably for local beauty products, drawing on Fasold's (1984) theory of language choice. It is further supported by Romaine's (1995) theory of code switching and Muysken's (2000) theory of code mixing. This study took a qualitative approach. The study collected data from 10 ad samples spanning the local beauty category. The study demonstrates data points on language choice, starting with several types of code switching (inter-sentential and intra-sentential) and code mixing (insertion, alternation, and congruence). According to this study's findings, intra-sentential switching and insertion were the most popular form language choices. Inter-sentential and alternation were the less prevalent forms.
2024-04-30T00:00:00+00:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement##
