THE EFFECT OF WOOD ASH ADDITION ON INCREASING SHEAR STRENGTH VALUE IN EXPANSIVE CLAY SOIL

Expansive clay is a type of soil that significantly expands when it absorbs water and contracts when it dries, which can pose challenges for building structures. Therefore, soil improvement is necessary, one method being chemical stabilization by adding wood ash. This study aims to analyze the impact of wood ash addition on the shear strength of expansive clay. The research utilized expansive clay mixed with wood ash at varying proportions of 0%, 6%, 12%, and 18%. The tests conducted included specific gravity, Atterberg limits (liquid limit and plastic limit) to determine the plasticity index, standard proctor, and direct shear tests. The findings revealed that in physical soil tests, such as specific gravity and Atterberg limits, values decreased as the ash content increased. Meanwhile, the direct shear test results indicated an improvement in cohesion (c) and internal friction angle (ϕ) compared to the untreated soil. The original soil exhibited a cohesion value (c) of 0.12 kg/cm² and an internal friction angle (ϕ) of 16.02º, whereas at 18% wood ash content, the cohesion value (c) increased to 0.22 kg/cm² and the internal friction angle (ϕ) reached 28º.
