PERFORMANCE OF HOT AND WARM ASPHALT MIXES OF WEARING LAYERS USING RECLAIMED ASPHALT PAVEMENT

Abstract

The The development of road infrastructure in Indonesia highlights the importance of utilizing efficient materials and applying sustainability principles in road construction. One of the innovations that has emerged is the use of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) incorporating Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP). This study aims to compare the performance of AC-WC (Asphalt Concrete – Wearing Course) mixtures using hot and warm mixing methods, both utilizing 30% RAP as a substitute for natural aggregates. The performance evaluation was conducted by testing Marshall stability, flow, air voids (VIM), and voids in mineral aggregate (VMA). An experimental approach was applied in this research, with laboratory testing to generate quantitative data. The analysis revealed that incorporating RAP in HMA resulted in better stability and performance compared to WMA, although both met the specified standards. Marshall testing on the HMA-RAP mixture showed a stability value of 1057 kg and a VIM value of 4.76%, while the WMA-RAP mixture recorded a stability of 944 kg and a VIM of 3.65%. In conclusion, HMA is more suitable for high RAP content mixtures, while WMA is more appropriate for limited RAP content or with the addition of specific additives. The results of this study can serve as a guideline for implementing environmentally friendly technologies in road infrastructure development.
