A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF CONCRETE VOLUME FOR STRUCTURAL BEAMS USING CONVENTIONAL AND BIM METHODS

Abstract

Inaccurate volume calculation in conventional methods poses a risk in construction projects. This study aims to quantitatively compare the concrete volume calculation results for structural beam work between the conventional method and the Building Information Modelling (BIM) method. This quantitative comparative study uses the construction of the Integrated Sports Psychology Building at Universitas Negeri Surabaya as a case study, where conventional volume data from the project was compared with the volume automatically extracted from a 3D BIM model created using Autodesk Revit. The results show a significant quantity difference, where the total volume from the conventional method was 14.30% larger than the BIM method. This difference is primarily caused by factors such as poor data integration and human error in the conventional method. This finding confirms that BIM adoption is an effective strategy to improve the accuracy of quantity take-offs and mitigate the risk of cost errors in construction projects.
