THE EFFECT OF SEASHELL POWDER AS A SUBSITITUTION FOR FLY ASH IN GEOPOLYMER CONCRETE WITH 8 M NAOH ACTIVATOR

Concrete is a construction material needed in infrastructure development. The compressive strength of concrete is influenced by its constituent materials. Making concrete with Portland cement can cause carbon emissions (CO2). Shell powder and fly ash can be used as alternative materials for geopolymer concrete to minimize the use of Portland cement. Fly ash is widely used as a constituent material for geopolymer concrete because of its high alumina and silica content. Shell powder contains pozzolanic compounds, so it can be used as a substitute for fly ash in making geopolymer concrete. Fly ash geopolymer concrete with shell powder substitution requires alkali activator sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to accelerate the reaction. Geopolymer concrete curing is carried out at room temperature. The test specimen in this study was a cylindrical concrete with a diameter of 10 cm x a height of 20 cm. Tests conducted on geopolymer concrete were compressive strength tests and porosity tests tested at the age of 28 days. The highest compressive strength result for concrete was 56.729 MPa at 15% shell powder substitution. The increased compressive strength results are inversely proportional to the decreased porosity value. The lowest porosity value is in geopolymer concrete with a 15% substitution of shell powder, namely 5.44%.
