BENTUK DAN KARAKTER TOPENG KARYA AKHMAD DI DESA MARENGAN LAOK KECAMATAN KALIANGET KABUPATEN SUMENEP

Abstract

Sumenep merupakan salah satu daerah dengan beragam produk budaya, salah satunya yaitu seni pertunjukan Topeng Dalang yang pada dekade 1970-1990an pernah mengalami puncak kejayaan dalam popularitasnya dan sangat diminati oleh masyarakat Sumenep. Salah satu perajin topeng yang  masih aktif hingga saat ini yaitu Akhmad di Desa Marengan Laok Kecamatan Kalianget. Topeng karya Akhmad memiliki ciri khas yang berbeda dengan topeng lainnya yang ada di Sumenep, karena detail topeng yang dibuat oleh Akhmad diperindah dengan ukiran. Detail bentuk topeng merupakan simbolisasi karakter tokoh tertentu. Saat ini perajin topeng di Sumenep kondisinya sangat memprihatinkan, hampir punah dan krisis penerus. Berdasarkan fenomena yang ada maka peneliti tertarik untuk mengungkap lebih jauh tentang karakteristik topeng karya Akhmad di Desa Marengan Laok Kabupaten Sumenep.

Penelitian ini membahas tentang bentuk dan karakteristik topeng karya Akhmad di Desa Marengan Laok Kecamatan Kalianget,  yang dalam pembahasannya meliputi macam unsur bentuk topeng dan karakter dari setiap tokoh serta makna simbolisasi warna pada tokoh topeng.

Jenis penelitian ini adalah kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data yaitu observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Validitas data dilakukan dengan triangulasi data dan informan review.

Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa  bentuk topeng karya Akhmad dibedakan berdasarkan karakter pada tokoh sehingga tercipta sebuah perbedaan unsur bentuk wajah pada tiap tokoh seperti mata, hidung, mulut, alis, kumis, jenggot, sinom, godeg, dan hiasan kepala. Karakteristik topeng karya Akhmad terdapat pada ukirannya yang halus, semua bentuk muka topeng sama yaitu bulat telur/oval, hiasan kepala dengan motif melati dan matahari, serta warna yang terdapat beberapa makna simbolis pada setiap tokohnya.

 Sumenep is one of the regions which has the variety of culture products. On the them is Topeng Dalang art performance that was very popular in the year of 1970-1990s. To date, one of the existing craftsmen is Akhmad who lives in Marengan Laok village, Kalianget sub-district. The masks produced by Akhmad have special characteristic which make them different with any other kinds of masks in Sumenep. This is because the detail of the masks was beautified with carvings. Besides, the detail o the masks becomes the symbolization of the characters of particular figures. However, the condition of the mask craftsmen in Sumenep these days was poor. It experiences a decrease on the total of the existing craftsmen and the successors. Thus, a study of the characteristics of the masks produced by Akhmad in Marengan Laok Sumenep was undertaken.

This study discussed the forms and the characteristics of the masks produced by Akhmad in Marengan Laok village, Kalianget sub-district, Sumenep. Additionally, the discussion covered the variety of the masks form element, the characteristics of each figure and the meaning of the color symbolization on the figure of the masks.

Furthermore, this qualitative study used observation, interview and documentation as the data collection thechniques. In addition, triangulation data and interviewee review were employed to check the validity of the data.

The result of the study showed that the forms of the masks produced by Akhmad were differentiated by the characters of the figures so that there was a difference on the element of the face shape on each figure such as the eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows, moustache, bangs, sideburns, and head decorations. The characteristics of the masks produced by Akhmad can be looked from the organized carvings, the oval shape of the masks, the head decorations using jasmine and sun pattern and the use of colors conveying some symbolic meanings on each of the figure.
