Cultural Acculturation in the Choreographic Process of Diaztiarni’s Kembang Jepun Dance
Abstract
Abstract: The Kembang Jepun area in North Surabaya is a multicultural district marked by the harmonious interaction among the Chinese, Arab, and Arek Suroboyoan ethnic groups. This sociological condition and history of peaceful plurality inspired choreographer Diaztiarni to create the Kembang Jepun dance as a visual representation of multi-ethnic harmony and a medium to promote the culture of Surabaya. This study aims to describe the cultural acculturation process within the choreographic process and to reveal the elements of Diaztiarni’s Kembang Jepun dance. This study employed a qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using triangulation. The results show that the choreographic process of the Kembang Jepun dance was conducted through three main stages: exploration, improvisation, and composition. Cross-ethnic cultural acculturation is visibly manifested in the dance elements, including the movement patterns, musical accompaniment, makeup and attire, and props. Diaztiarni’s Kembang Jepun dance is not merely visual entertainment, but a performing art piece that successfully integrates the cultural characteristics of the Chinese, Arab, and Arek Suroboyoan traditions to tangibly prove that ethnic and cultural background differences in North Surabaya can blend and coexist peacefully, amicably, and harmoniously.
