MORAL KARAKTER POLLY MELALUI KARAKTERISASI TIDAK LANGSUNG DALAM FILM "DIE GÄNSEPRINZESSIN" KARYA FRANK STOYE

Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study aims to describe Polly's moral character in Frank Stoye's film Die Gänseprinzessin through the method of indirect characterization (showing) proposed by M.H. Abrams. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with the film Die Gänseprinzessin as the primary data source, while Polly's dialogues and actions serve as the research data. The data were collected through repeated viewing, observation, and note-taking, and were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, comprising data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. Abrams's theory of characterization served as the primary framework to identify Polly's character through showing, while Franz Magnis-Suseno's moral theory served as a supporting framework to interpret her moral character. The findings reveal that Polly's moral character is constructed indirectly through her dialogues and actions, reflecting three aspects: morality, moral autonomy, and moral courage. Morality is shown through Polly's concern for others and her willingness to take responsibility for her actions. Moral autonomy is reflected in her ability to make decisions based on her own conscience, even when they contradict the King's authority. Moral courage appears in her willingness to take responsibility, protect others from punishment, and speak the truth despite personal risk. Therefore, Polly's moral character is not presented explicitly by the narrator, but is constructed through characterization interpreted from her dialogues and actions, demonstrating the close relationship between characterization and moral formation in narrative film.
