Abstract

The open unemployment rate serves as a critical indicator of labor market conditions and regional economic stability. Bangka Belitung’s economy depends on capital-intensive tin mining, making it susceptible to global price volatility. This condition impacts job creation, especially when weighed against population growth, minimum wage regulations, and changing consumer purchasing power. This study aims to analyze the influence of population size, the provincial minimum wage, and per capita expenditure on the open unemployment rate for the 2018–2024 period, utilizing tin prices as a control variable. The research employs a quantitative approach with panel data regression, from six regencies and one city. Secondary data were sourced from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the Department of Manpower, and PT Timah Tbk. The results indicate that all variables simultaneously have a significant effect on open unemployment. Partially, population size and per capita expenditure exert a significant negative influence, while the UMP has a significant positive influence on unemployment. These findings confirm that unemployment in Bangka Belitung is driven by demographic factors, wage policies, and purchasing power. Consequently, it is recommended that the local government promote labor-intensive economic diversification and strengthen non-mining sectors to ensure a more resilient labor market.
