Abstract

The hull is a part of the ship that is useful for providing buoyancy to the ship. The structural load of the ship can cause gradual stress on the hull welding joints, which can cause cracks, and eventually cause leaks. This study aims to determine the maximum tensile strength and bending strength of SS400 carbon steel welding joints for ship hull applications. Experimental method is used to analyze the effect of groove variation (single v-groove 60º, double v-groove 60º, single bevel groove 45º) on SS400 carbon steel with butt joint, 3G welding position, 130 Ampere current, and tensile test taken from ASTM E8 standard and bending test taken from ASTM E290 standard. The results of this study are that there is a significant effect of the results of groove variations on SS400 carbon steel material on tensile and bending strength. The highest tensile strength value in the double v-groove variation is an average of 537.06 MPa. While the lowest tensile strength value in the single bevel groove variation is an average of 437.78 MPa. The highest bending strength value in the double v-groove variation is an average of 1069.75 MPa, while the lowest bending strength value in the single bevel groove variation is an average of 762.11 MPa.
