Abstract

This study aims to describe the types and functions of expressive speech acts in the talk show Bocah-Bocah Kosong, episode eleven, featuring Satria Mahathir on YouTube, using a pragmatic approach and Searle’s theory. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, utilising observation and note-taking techniques to analyse transcripts of conversations among the host, moderator, and guest. The results indicate 64 instances of expressive speech acts classified into 13 types, including expressions of gratitude, greetings, compliments, criticisms, congratulations, jokes, surprise, anger, sadness, hope, complaints, mockery, and apologies. Joking is identified as the most dominant type. Each type serves specific expressive functions, such as expressing gratitude, building familiarity, conveying admiration, expressing disagreement, offering appreciation, creating humor, showing confusion, channeling negative emotions, expressing hope, and conveying regret. These findings demonstrate that expressive speech acts play an important role in reflecting speakers’ psychological states and in shaping distinctive communicative dynamics within a relaxed, humorous, interactive, and communicative digital talk show context.
