Mobilitas sosial adalah kemampuan individu atau kelompok untuk berpindah status sosialnya dengan arah ke bawah atau ke atas. Hal ini disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor seperti ekonomi, pendidikan dan pernikahan. Seperti dalam novel karya Charles Dickens yang berjudul ‘Our Mutual Friend’ yang lebih banyak menonjolkan tentang mobilitas sosial yang terjadi dalam masyarakat. Beberapa karakter dalam novel mengalami mobilitas sosial dengan arah ke atas maupun ke bawah. Penelitian ini mengguanakan konsep mobilitas sosial sebagai pendekatan untuk menganalisis penelitian ini. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menggambarkan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi beberapa karakter dalam cerita untuk mendapatkan perpindahan kelas sosial dan untuk menggambarkan mobilitas sosial yang merubah gaya hidup beberapa karakter dalam novel tersebut. Data dari penelitian tersebut diklasifikasikan berdasarkan faktor-faktor penyebab mobilitas sosial serta dampak dari mobilitas sosial tersebut yang berpengaruh pada gaya hidup. Jadi, hasil dari penelitian tersebut menunjukkan bahwa beberapa karakter dalam novel mengalami mobilitas sosial yang disebabkan oleh faktor tersebut serta memiliki dampak pada gaya hidup mereka.

Abstract

Social mobility is the ability of the individual or group to move the social statues in downward or upward direction. It is caused by some factors such as economic, education and marriage. Like in Charles Dickens’ novel with the title of Our Mutual Friend who showed more about social mobility that occurred in society. Some characters in the novel got the social mobility in downward or upward direction. This study used concept of social mobility as the approach to analyse this study. The purpose of this study are to depict the factors that influence characters to achieve social mobility and to depict the characters’ lifestyle from the social mobility. The data from this study is classified based on the factors of social mobility and its impact on lifestyle. So, the result of this study showed that some characters in this novel got the social mobility because of those factors and got the impacts on their lifestyle.
