Hero's Journey in Disney Movie Encanto

Abstract

This study analyze hero’s journey in Disney movie Encanto and find out the archetypal characters influence on the hero’s journey in Disney movie Encanto. The aim of this study is wants to reveal that even Mirabel shown as the weakness character because she did not get a magical power, she still can represent as the hero. This study uses data in the form of script and screenshoots taken from visual and textual observations of the Encanto movie with Hero’s Journey theory by Joseph Campbell. According to this study, Mirabel Madrigal success on passing the three sections of the hero’s journey which are Departure, Initiation, and Return even though Mirabel did not undergo all of the seventeen stages. And, the researcher find five archetypal characters which are Ally, Mentor, Herald, Shadow, and Shapeshifter. The conclusion of this study is Mirabel could be represented as a hero according to her adventure that related to the theory of the Hero’s Journey pattern based on Campbell’s theory and many archetypal characters take part in Mirabel's journey.
