THE EFFECT OF ADDING GYPSUM WASTE ON THE SETTLEMENT OF EXPANSIVE CLAY SOIL

Abstract

Clay soil is one type of soil that is less advantageous because its permeability is low and it has high plasticity, which can cause consolidation to take a long time. In this study, the stabilization method used is chemical stabilization by adding an additive in the form of gypsum waste at percentages of 10%, 20%, and 30% of the dry soil weight. The result of the compaction test indicate that with a higher percentage of gypsum waste addition, the value of  increases, the   value of the original soil is 1,372 gr/cm3. The highest  value is 1,469 gr/cm3, obtained from  soil mixed with a 20% gypsum waste addition. The results of the consolidation tests indicate that with a higher percentage of gypsum waste addition, the compression index (Cc) and the consolidation settlement (Sc) values decrease. The Cc value of the original soil is 0,5533, and the Sc value is 0,3906 cm. The lowest Cc value is 0,2683 and the lowest Sc value is 0,2263 cm, obtained from soil mixed with a 20% gypsum waste addition.
