Abstract

Clay soils generally have poor quality, therefore soil improvement measures need to be taken to improve their bearing capacity. Addition of environmentally friendly materials such as bagasse ash and red brick powder is one alternative. The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of the addition of the mixture on soil properties, cohesion value, angle of friction, and bearing capacity value of soil in Mulung Village, Gresik Regency. This research includes specific gravity test, Atterberg limit test, standard proctor test, and direct shear test. This study used 3 variations of test samples with bagasse ash content of 15%, 20%, and 25% and equalized red brick powder content of 15% in each sample variation. The results showed that the addition of the mixture was able to increase the cohesion value (c) in variation 2 to 0.2588 kg/cm2 from the initial value of 0.1290 kg/cm2, while variations 1 and 3 are actually decreased the cohesion value of the soil. The addition of the mixture can also increase the value of the inner friction angle (ϕ) along with the increase of AAT content in the mixture, and the largest increase occurred in variation 3 from the initial value of 23.20˚ to 26.11˚. The addition of the mixture also increased the bearing capacity (qult) value in variation 2 to 10.8895 kg/cm2 from the initial value of 6.0839 kg/cm2, while variations 1 and 3 actually decreased the bearing capacity value of the soil.
