EFFECT OF EXPANSIVE CLAY SETTLEMENT USING A MIXTURE OF LUMAJANG SAND AND CARBIDE WASTE

Expansive clay is a soil that has cohesion and plasticity and has the potential for significant development and shrinkage. In this study, soil stabilization was carried out using a chemical method by adding several added materials in the form of lumajang sand with a percentage of 20% and carbide waste with a percentage of 6%, 11%, 16% of dry soil weight. The results of the standard compaction test show that with a greater percentage of the addition of carbide waste, the value (γdmac) increases. The value (γdmac) of native soil is 1.372 gr/cm3. The highest (γdmac) value was obtained at a mixture percentage of 20% lumajang sand and 11% carbide waste of 1.404 gr/cm3. The results of the consolidation test show that the addition of carbide waste is greater, the value of the compression index (Cc) and the value of soil settlement (Sc) decreases. The original soil Cc value is 0.55 and Sc value is 0.66 cm. The lowest Cc value is 0.07 and the lowest Sc value is 0.12 cm in the preset conditions of a mixture of 20% liumajang sand and 11% carbide waste.
