TOXIC BEAUTY STANDARD SEBAGAI SUMBER IDE PENCIPTAAN KARYA SENI LUKIS

Abstract

Toxic beauty standards refer to unrealistic ideals of beauty that can have negative impacts on both physical and mental health, encouraging some individuals to alter themselves in order to conform to society's definition of the "ideal" appearance. The creation of these paintings serves as a medium for the artist to explore creative ideas and express themselves, while also fostering self-confidence and gratitude for the body and identity bestowed by God. The inspiration for this artistic project stems from the issue of toxic beauty standards, which is frequently discussed on social media and often pressures individuals to change themselves to meet societal expectations. This issue is then visualized through a series of paintings. The creative process employed the Practice-led Research method, consisting of four stages: preparation, imagination, development, and execution. The outcome of this project comprises five collage paintings, each measuring 100 cm × 100 cm, titled: (1) Barbie Doll, (2) Skintone, (3) Hormone, (4) Body Shape, and (5) Pressure. The primary objective of this artistic creation is to provide a medium for self-expression, with the concept inspired by the issue of toxic beauty standards. All artworks underwent a validation process conducted by several art practitioners. The evaluators concluded that the works demonstrated a strong conceptual foundation and engaging visual appeal. However, they also recommended that the artist further develop their understanding of human anatomy, composition, and the exploration of body forms to enhance both the visual quality of the artworks and the effectiveness of the messages they convey.

Toxic beauty standard merupakan standar kecantikan yang tidak realistis dan dapat berdampak negatif pada kesehatan fisik maupun mental, sehingga mendorong beberapa orang untuk mengubah diri agar sesuai dengan definisi cantik yang dianggap ideal oleh beberapa masyarakat. Manfaat dari penciptaan karya seni lukis ini, perupa dapat mengeksplor ide-ide kreatif dan sarana ekspresi diri untuk meningkatkan rasa percaya diri serta rasa syukur atas diri yang telah diberikan Tuhan. Fokus ide penciptaan ini berasal dari isu standar kecantikan yang sering dibahas di media sosial, yang mendorong sebagian orang mengubah diri demi memenuhi ekspektasi masyarakat. Isu tersebut kemudian divisualisasikan ke dalam karya seni lukis. Penciptaan karya ini menggunakan metode Practice-Ied Research yang memiliki alur: tahap persiapan, tahap mengimajinasi, tahap pengembangan dan tahap pengerjaan. Hasilnya berupa lima karya seni lukis berteknik kolase 100cm x 100cm sebanyak 5 buah karya, yang masing-masing karya berjudul 1) Barbie Doll, 2) Skintone, 3) Hormone, 4) Body Shape, 5) Pressure. Adapun tujuan dari penciptaan karya ini adalah sarana untuk mengungkapkan ekspresi, dan sumber idenya dari toxic beauty standard. Seluruh karya seni yang dihasilkan telah melalui proses validasi dari beberapa praktisi seni, dengan masukan karya sudah memiliki konsep yang baik dan visual yang menarik. Namun, validator memberikan saran agar perupa mengembangkan anatomi tubuh, komposisi, serta eksplorasi bentuk tubuh sehingga kualitas visual dan penyampaian pesan dalam karya menjadi lebih optimal.
