Efforts in Performing Masculine Movement Characteristics in the Jathil Dance of Reyog Ponorogo, Bantarangin Version

This study examines the masculine movement character of the Jathil dance in the Bantarangin version of Reyog Ponorogo as performed by female dancers. The research is grounded in the transformation of Jathil movement characteristics, from the earlier representation of gemblak to the image of a strong and assertive warrior. The study aims to describe the techniques of movement execution in the Jathil dance and to identify the masculine movement character formed within the context of the Bantarangin version of Reyog performance. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, using observation, interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques. The research subjects included choreographers, Reyog artists, and cultural practitioners in Ponorogo Regency. The findings indicate that the masculine movement character is constructed through the use of strong energy, fast tempo, spatial control, and consistent body posture. Physical conditioning during the training process plays an important role in developing physical strength and movement precision. Overall, the masculine character of the Jathil dance in the Bantarangin version represents the performativity of the female dancer’s body, affirming values of courage, resilience, and warrior spirit within the Reyog Ponorogo performing art tradition.
