Abstract

This study aims to examine the existence of the stages of Javanese mysticism in the film Pabrik
Gula (Uncut) through the perspective of Niels Mulder, who conceptualizes the spiritual journey into
four stages: syariat (sharia), tarekat (spiritual path), hakikat (ultimate truth), and makrifat (gnosis). This
research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a cultural studies approach to understand film
as a symbolic representation of the social and spiritual realities of Javanese society. The data were
obtained from scenes, dialogues, character expressions, as well as visual and narrative elements that
represent practices, symbols, and experiences of Javanese mysticism. Data collection was conducted
through intensive observation and systematic documentation of the film’s narrative structure, while data
analysis applied an interpretative hermeneutic approach to uncover the meanings embedded within its
symbols and events. The findings indicate that the stage of syariat is represented through adherence
to sacred rules, temporal prohibitions, and daily rituals functioning as spiritual protection. The stage
of tarekat appears in the characters’ inner awareness process, marked by spiritual trials, internal
conflicts, and guidance from a respected elder figure as a mediator of traditional values. The stage of
hakikat is reflected in a profound understanding of life’s meaning and the interconnectedness between
the human and unseen worlds. Meanwhile, makrifat is embodied in attitudes of surrender, inner
tranquility, and the unification of human will with divine will. This study affirms that the film
symbolically and contextually represents Javanese mysticism within contemporary popular culture.
