Abstract

Abstract
The loan word from foreign languages to Japanese called gairaigo. This study discusses the shortening of
gairaigo which is widely used by Japanese people, especially the younger generation in everyday life. This
study uses the theory of Yonekawa (1988) which divides Japanese abbreviations based on the location of
the abbreviations. This study was conducted to determine the origin of the abbreviation gairaigo which is
widely used in Japanese dramas and articles in Japanese media. This study is a descriptive qualitative
research. The researcher collected data using the note-taking method, where the researcher listened to the
dialogues between characters in Japanese dramas and articles in Japanese media containing gairaigo, then
analyzed whether the gairaigo found had abbreviations. In this study, researcher found that gairaigo
shortening can be divided into two types, which is shortening from one word and shortening from two
words. The shortening from one word, there were two subs found, which are Jouryaku and Geryaku. On
the shortening from the two words, six subs were found, which are fukugougo no kaku youso joubu o
shouryaku, fukugougo no kaku youso kabu o shouryaku, fukugougo no zenkouyouso no joubu to
koukouyouso no kabu o shouryaku, fukugougo no zenkouyouso no kabu to koukouyouso no joubu o
shouryaku, fukugougo no zenkouyouso no kabu dake o shouryaku, and fukugougo no koukouyouso no kabu
dake o shouryaku. In addition, there were also found some datas in the form combination of gairaigo and
wago, gairaigo and kango, wago and gairaigo, and kango and gairaigo. The most widely used shortening
of gairaigo is the types of jouryaku, geryaku, and fukugougo no kaku youso kabu o shouryaku.
