Language is a system of sound symbols arbitrarily used by members of a social group to cooperate,
communicate, and identify themselves. Semantics in the Japanese language is referred to as "imiron" (??
?) with its study objects including word meanings (????), the meaning relationships between words
and other words (??????), phrase meanings (????), and sentence meanings (????). The
types of meanings themselves are divided into various kinds depending on the perspective taken. Generally,
types of meanings are divided into two, namely lexical meaning and grammatical meaning. "Jouzu" and
"tokui" are synonyms that have almost the same meaning, which is "skilled at doing something." This
research aims to delve deeper into the meanings of the adjectival nouns "jouzu" and "tokui" in a sentence or
conversation. The approach used is a qualitative approach with a descriptive research method. Data collection
was carried out using the non-participatory observation technique, note-taking technique, and closed
questionnaire collection to support the research. The study was conducted based on Moriyama's synonym
identification theory (1998b) and Yamato's classification theory of "jouzu" and "tokui" (1957:135-137).
From this research, 18 data points were found from dialogues in the anime "Golden Kamuy" season 1 and 7
responses from the distributed questionnaires. The results showed that "jouzu" and "tokui" can be
interchanged in a sentence if the sentence indicates a universal context and cannot be interchanged if the
sentence implies praise or describes the first subject or oneself.
