ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the obedience and violation of politeness maxims, and the politeness scale of
female police officers in the anime "Hakozume Kouban Joshi No Gyakushu". The maxims of politeness
according to Leech is a theory that classifies the maxims based on the norms, culture, and ethics of
speakers and interlocutors. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a pragmatic approach in
analyzing the compliance and violation of politeness maxims and politeness scales that appear in the
conversations of female police officers. There were 24 data of compliance and 13 data of violation of
politeness maxims from 37 data in the anime "Hakozume Kouban Joshi No Gyakushuu". 24 data of
politeness compliance, with the most data, namely, the tact maxim and modesty maxim each with 6 data.
The most politeness scale is on the authority scale and social distance scale. In the violation of the maxims
of politeness, the most data is on the tact maxims with 4 data, the most scale is on the cost benefit scale
with 5 data. The data shows that the tact maxim plays an important role in every utterance of the
policewoman character in interacting with the community. The use of the tact maxim reflects how the
police as a protector of the community whose every behavior and speech will be emulated by the
community.
