Abstract

ABSTRACT

Kotowaza (????) are short phrases containing lessons or satire passed down through generations,
and their meanings encompass wise advice and moral values. This wise advice and these moral
values are encapsulated in kotowaza that contain the kanji kokoro. In the context of kotowaza, kokoro (?
) represents values related to emotional and spiritual aspects. This study aims to describe the
idiomatic meanings of kotowaza containing the kanji kokoro and analyze the semantic fields of the
idiomatic meanings from the data of kotowaza containing the kanji kokoro. This research employs
semantic analysis in examining the idiomatic meanings and the semantic fields of kotowaza
containing the kanji kokoro. The method used is a qualitative descriptive method with an uninvolved
conversation analysis technique. Based on the analysis, 15 kotowaza containing the kanji kokoro were
found. These data were analyzed based on idiomatic meanings and semantic fields, which consist of
two types: collocation set fields and collocation fields. From the data analysis results, it can be
concluded that 15 idiomatic meanings of kotowaza reflecting human mood were found. Additionally,
2 collocation set fields, 8 sub-collocation sets, and each sub-set forming collocation fields were
identified.
