At Haneda Airport in Tokyo, one of the world's busiest airports, the cabin cleaning service team consists of
individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Leaders from both Japanese and non-Japanese backgrounds
play a crucial role in directing the team. Differences in command language styles between Japanese and
non-Japanese leaders are often pronounced and can impact team dynamics. This study aims to identify
these differences and their effects on task comprehension and execution within the diverse team at Haneda
Airport. Using a qualitative approach with direct observation and in-depth interviews with eight leaders
from various cultural backgrounds, data were analyzed descriptively to identify key themes related to
command language usage. The first finding indicates that Japanese leaders tend to use indirect and polite
command language, while non-Japanese leaders are more functional and direct. The second finding reveals
that these differences significantly affect task understanding and execution; teams led by Japanese leaders
take longer to understand instructions but produce results more aligned with the given directives, whereas
teams led by non-Japanese leaders understand instructions more quickly but sometimes misinterpret them.
