Abstract

ABSTRACT

The expressive and imaginative use of onomatopoeia is a form of linguistic variation. Japanese, in particular,
has a unique approach to onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia is a fascinating linguistic study where words or groups of words
are used to imitate sounds and the sources that produce them, serving as a means of communication. This research aims
to describe the types and contextual meanings of food-related onomatopoeia in the anime Shokugeki no Souma. A
qualitative descriptive method was employed, involving detailed descriptions of the meanings of onomatopoeia found in
the dialogue of the data. Data collection was conducted through listening and note-taking, where dialogues from
Shokugeki no Souma were listened to, and relevant parts were noted and categorized based on their type. The data
sources for this study were Shokugeki no Souma seasons 1 (episodes 1-24) and 4 (episode 3). The results showed 21
instances of onomatopoeia, categorized into two types: 3 giongo and 18 gitaigo. The contextual meanings of
onomatopoeia in Shokugeki no Souma can be summarized as follows: the contextual meaning of each onomatopoeia
may vary depending on the specific situation. For example, the onomatopoeia KariKari (????), which generally
means "hard," can also mean "crispy" based on the context of the story.
