Abstract

ABSTRACT

Linguistics as a field that studies the intricacies of human language has several parts, one of which is pragmatics.
Pragmatics studies the speaker's intention in uttering a certain lingual unit in a language. The purpose of this study is to
determine the meaning of direct imperative speech used in the cabin cleaning work environment at Haneda Airport Tokyo
based on Japanese sentence patterns and based on the translation of the speech into Indonesian. The research was
conducted using descriptive qualitative method. The data of direct imperative speech was collected through observation
technique sourced from the communication interaction of 2 Haneda airport cabin cleaning field employees. 38 speech
data were obtained from the observation. The analysis of the 38 data based on Japanese sentence patterns resulted in 15
utterances meaning request, 8 utterances meaning order, 4 utterances meaning invitation, 7 utterances meaning hope, and
4 utterances meaning permission. Meanwhile, the analysis of the same 38 observation data based on the translation of the
utterances into Indonesian resulted in 4 utterances meaning invitation, 7 utterances meaning hope, 2 utterances meaning
permission, 5 utterances meaning order, 7 utterances meaning request, 2 utterances meaning request for permission, and
11 utterances meaning request.
