Abstract

Haiku is a short form of Japanese poetry known for its simplicity and depth of meaning. Haiku typically consists of 17 syllables arranged in three lines with a 5-7-5 pattern. One of the key elements in haiku is kigo, a word or phrase that signifies a particular season, providing a temporal context and atmosphere to the poem. This study aims to classify winter kigo in Seiichiro Aoki's Haiku Saijiki and analyze their semantic meanings. The research
employs semantic analysis using a qualitative descriptive approach. The primary data is taken from Seiichiro Aoki's Haiku Saijiki. Data collection is conducted through in-depth reading and noting kigo related to the winter season. The 35 collected data are then analyzed to identify the classification and meaning contained in these kigo.
The analysis results show that seven types of winter kigo were successfully identified and classified, including seasonal changes (jikou), astronomical phenomena (tenmon), geographical phenomena (chiri), religious or cultural activities (gyouji), social aspects and daily life (seikatsu), the animal world (doubutsu), and plants (shokubutsu). This classification helps identify patterns in the use of kigo and the meanings produced.
