Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of figurative language in the song lyrics of the Shintenchi album by the music group Shintenchi Kaibyaku Shuudan - Zigzag using a stylistic approach. This album was chosen due to its rich use of stylistic elements to convey emotional themes and Japanese cultural values. The main focus of this research is to identify the types of figurative language present in the lyrics and understand the meanings embedded within them. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative, with the primary data consisting of lyrics from ten songs in the Shintenchi album. Data collection was conducted through text analysis using the observation and note-taking technique. The analysis focused on identifying types of figurative language classified based on Burhan Nurgiyantoro's theory, such as metaphor, personification, hyperbole, irony, simile, and repetition. The results show that 33 figures of speech were found, consisting of 10 metaphors, 4 personifications, 5 hyperboles, 7 repetitions, 5 ironies, and 2 similes. These figures of speech include many negative emotional meanings such as sadness, disappointment, loneliness, despair, anxiety, and frustration. However, there are also some figures of speech with meanings of happiness, such as hope, freedom, and joy. The results also demonstrate that figurative language plays a significant role in enhancing the beauty and depth of the lyrics. Its use not only enriches the language but also effectively conveys emotional messages and strong cultural themes. This study highlights the connection between linguistic elements and the socio-cultural dimensions underlying Japanese musical works.
