Abstract

ABSTRACT

Gitaigo (擬態語) onomatopoeia refers to imitative sounds that represent the sounds or states of inanimate objects. This study aims to identify the patterns, forms, and meanings of onomatopoeic gitaigo found in a collection of Japanese children's songs, known as Nihon no Douyou (日本の童謡), and to find their equivalents in the Indonesian language. Data were obtained from 40 children's songs performed by Himawari, using a descriptive qualitative approach. The results revealed three patterns of Japanese onomatopoeia in the Nihon no Douyou collection: 1-mora onomatopoeia (2 instances), 2-mora onomatopoeia (41 instances), and special pattern onomatopoeia (19 instances). Additionally, eight patterns of equivalent Indonesian onomatopoeia were identified, with the most frequent being KVK (15 instances) and KKVK (8 instances). Finally, the study found 32 instances of onomatopoeia with Indonesian equivalents and 30 instances without direct equivalents in Indonesian, which were interpreted using other word forms, such as nouns (2 instances), verbs (18 instances), and adjectives (10 instances). This research contributes to cross-cultural understanding of onomatopoeia and serves as a reference for teaching and translating Japanese from the perspective of Japanese language learners.
