Abstract

ABSTRACT
Language is a means of communication that enables humans to build social relationships, exchange
information, and express emotions through the use of complex sentence structures, diverse vocabulary,
and distinctive elements such as onomatopoeia. Like other languages, Japanese also has onomatopoeia,
which is categorized into several types: giongo (擬音語), gitaigo (擬態語), giseigo (擬声語), gijougo (擬情
語), and giyougo (擬用語), used to describe or imitate specific sounds, movements, or emotional states. The
purpose of this study is to describe the contextual meanings and functions of rapid movement
onomatopoeias in the manga Boku no Hero Academia Volume 21 by Kohei Horikoshi. The data source
analyzed is derived from the manga Boku no Hero Academia Volume 21, focusing on onomatopoeias that
depict rapid movement using a qualitative descriptive method. Data collection techniques involved
observation, reading, and note-taking on onomatopoeias representing rapid movement found in the pages
of Boku no Hero Academia Volume 21. After data analysis, 24 occurrences of onomatopoeias representing
rapid movement were identified, classified into eight categories: dodging with 4 occurrences, forceful
action with 2 occurrences, walking with 2 occurrences, dashing with 2 occurrences, nimble action with 1
occurrence, striking actions with 2 occurrences, swift actions with 9 occurrences, and release/bursting with
2 occurrences. Furthermore, the analysis continued with four identified functions of the onomatopoeias: い
ろいろな動作 (various physical movements) with 5 occurrences. はやい動作、まじめな態度 (fast
movements and serious attitudes) with 12 occurrences. やり方 (ways of doing something) with 1
occurrence. 変化 (changes) with 6 occurrences.
