Abstract

Sonkeigo is a form of honorific language used to show respect towards someone by elevating their actions, gestures, and conditions. It is used when addressing superiors at work, teachers at school, customers in stores, and people of higher social status than the speaker. This research aims to analyze the use of subject honorification in sonkeigo and its language functions by character Meido Mei in manga Kimi no Koto Daidaidaidaidaisuki na 100-nin no Kanojo which commonly known as hyakkano. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive. The data consists of written dialogues containing subject honorification in sonkeigo as used by the character Meido Mei in manga.

The results of the research show that there are two types of subject honorification found: the use of honorific suffixes 24 instances and the use of special nouns 2 instances. Furthermore, four types of language functions were identified in Meido Mei’s speech. First, the personal function, where the speaker expresses their feelings while speaking, 7 instances. Second, the directive function, where the speaker directs the behavior of the listener, 5 instances. Third, the phatic function, where the speaker establishes contact with the listener, such as when greeting or parting, 2 instances. Fourth, the referential function, where the speaker discusses surrounding objects or refers to someone, 12 instances.
