Abstract

Wakamono kotoba refers to a non-standard variety of Japanese used by young people for self-expression and communication, as well as to mark their social identity. Anime was selected as the object of study because it often reflects the language of youth in a realistic and contextual manner. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. Data were collected through observation and note-taking from the dialogue in episode 1 of Oshi No Ko. The data were analyzed using Tsujimura's (2014) theory of word formation and Tanaka's (2015) theory of wakamono kotoba functions. The results revealed eight wakamono kotoba examples, including 6 abbreviations, 1 nominalization, and 1 borrowing from a foreign language. The identified functions include social identity, expressiveness, creativity, aesthetics, and distinctiveness from standard language. These findings suggest that wakamono kotoba in anime serve linguistic and social purposes and reflect the social values, group identity, and cultural expression of Japanese youth.
