Abstract

Abstract

Kotowaza, as proverbs in the Japanese language, reflect societal norms and values, including the Bushidō principles rooted in the samurai code of ethics. Okinawa Prefecture, with its unique language, has kotowaza that embody Bushidō values. This study aims to analyze the relationship between Okinawan kotowaza and Bushidō values in Japanese culture. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this study examines kotowaza from the Okinawa Kotowaza Jiten and identifies 15 kotowaza related to the Bushidō code, such as integrity (義), courage (勇), honesty (誠信), and honor (名誉). Based on their function, these kotowaza are classified into criticism (kougekiteki), life experience (keikenteki), and advice (kyoukunteki). The findings of the study indicate that kotowaza are not only linguistic expressions but also reflections of traditional moral values. This study is expected to broaden the understanding of Japanese culture and its application in daily life.
