Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms and social factors influencing the use of sonkeigo (honorific language) in the anime Karasu wa Aruji wo Erabanai episodes 1–12. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through observation and note-taking of dialogues containing sonkeigo. The results show 43 sonkeigo instances, dominated by special verbs such as kudasaru (5), irassharu (1), oide ni naru (3), gozonji (3), nasaru (2), goran ni naru (2), and meshiagaru (2). Other patterns found include (ra)reru (9), o/go ~ ni naru (11), and o/go ~ kudasai (5). The main social factors influencing their use are social status (31 instances) and interpersonal relations (12 instances). These findings indicate that sonkeigo use in the anime reflects the Japanese politeness system emphasizing respect, hierarchy, and social harmony.
