Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms and functions of gitaigo and giongo onomatopoeia found in Aikatsu! Season
1 episodes 1–9 produced by Studio Sunrise. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a
semantic approach. The data consist of onomatopoeic expressions appearing in dialogues and scenes, collected
through observation, documentation, and transcription techniques. The data were analyzed by classifying the
onomatopoeia into gitaigo and giongo and examining their forms and functions based on contextual usage. The
results indicate that gitaigo is predominantly formed through reduplication and functions to express characters’
emotions, states, and movements without producing actual sounds. Meanwhile, giongo functions to imitate real
sounds produced by objects or activities, thereby clarifying actions and situations in the narrative. Thus, the use
of gitaigo and giongo plays a significant role in enhancing emotional expression and meaning in anime.
