PENGGUNAAN KEIGO DALAM DRAMA WHAT COMES AFTER LOVE KARYA JUNG HAE SIM DAN MOON HYUN SUNG : KAJIAN SOSIOLINGUISTIK
Abstract
This study aims to describe the use of keigo and the social factors influencing its use in the drama What Comes After Love by Jung Hae Sim and Moon Hyun Sung. The drama is a Japan–Korea collaboration that portrays interactions among characters with different social and cultural backgrounds, making it an interesting object of analysis from a sociolinguistic perspective.
This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The data consist of inter-character dialogues containing keigo expressions taken from episodes 1 to 6 of the drama What Comes After Love. The data were collected using observation and note-taking techniques. Data analysis was conducted by classifying keigo into three types—sonkeigo, kenjougo, and teineigo—and by analyzing the social factors that influence their use.
The results show that there are 35 conversations containing keigo. Among these, several conversations include two to three keigo elements within a single utterance. Overall, the data consist of 25 instances of sonkeigo, 20 instances of kenjougo, and 64 instances of teineigo. The most dominant social factors influencing the use of keigo in this drama are social status and situational context. The use of keigo reflects professional relationships as well as the level of formality established in interactions among Japanese and Korean characters.
