Abstract

This study aims to clarify the role of visual onomatopoeia in constructing the atmosphere of battle scenes in One Piece, focusing on the fight between Luffy and Kaido from chapters 1000 to 1049. While previous studies on onomatopoeia have primarily emphasized linguistic aspects, this research approaches onomatopoeia as a visual element and highlights its interaction with panel structure. Specifically, the analysis examines the morphological characteristics of visual onomatopoeia, their spatial relationship with panel types, and their contribution to atmosphere construction. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative method based on multimodal semiotics. The data consist of 395 instances of onomatopoeia appearing in battle scenes, which are categorized into giongo (sound-symbolic words), giseigo (voice-imitative words), and gitaigo (mimetic words). These data are further analyzed in relation to panel formats (inter-panel, splash panel, and double-page spread) and narrative functions (establisher, initial, prolongation, peak, and release). The results indicate that sound-symbolic words representing physical impacts are the most frequently used. In addition, large and emphatically styled typography predominantly appears in peak panels, serving to intensify the climax of the battle. Conversely, repetitive onomatopoeia are commonly found in prolongation panels, contributing to the regulation of rhythm and tension within the fight. Overall, the study demonstrates that the atmosphere of battle is constructed through the integration of visualized sound and panel structure.
