HUBUNGAN GAYA BELAJAR MAHASISWA DENGAN SKOR KELULUSAN JAPANESE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST (JLPT)

Abstract

This study aims to describe learning style tendencies and examine whether there is a relationship between learning styles and Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) passing scores among students of the Japanese Language Education Program at Universitas Negeri Surabaya. A quantitative correlational approach was applied with a sample of 28 students from the 2022–2025 cohorts who had passed at least JLPT N5, selected through purposive sampling. Learning style data were collected using the standardized The VARK Questionnaire version 8.01 Indonesian edition from VARK-Learn, while Japanese language proficiency data were obtained from participants’ JLPT certificate scores. Since the data were not normally distributed, hypothesis testing was conducted using non-parametric Spearman Rank correlation analysis with IBM SPSS. The results showed that the significance values of all learning styles were above 0.05, namely Visual 0.932, Auditory 0.280, Read/Write 0.214, and Kinesthetic 0.243, indicating that H0 was accepted and Ha was rejected. This study concludes that learning styles are not a major determining factor in students’ JLPT passing scores.
