ANALYSIS OF THE USE OF INDIRECT IMPERATIVE SENTENCES IN THE ANIME “WORKING!! SEASON 1” BY KARINO TAKATSU

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research aims to describe the forms and meanings of indirect imperative speech acts in the anime Working!! Season 1 by Karino Takatsu, utilizing the listening and note-taking techniques for data collection, alongside the theory triangulation technique to ensure data validity. The analysis of sentence forms was examined using a combination of theories by Chaer (2010) and Rahardi (2005), while the pragmatic meaning analysis was classified based on Kashiwazaki's (1993) theory. The results of the study revealed a total of 45 data of indirect imperative speech acts; in terms of sentence forms, 29 data of declarative sentences (consisting of 25 active sentences and 4 inversion sentences) and 16 data of interrogative sentences (consisting of 13 total interrogative and 3 partial interrogative sentences) were found. In terms of pragmatic meaning, the study identified 24 data of commanding meaning, 14 data of requesting meaning, and 7 data of advising/recommending meaning, with the active declarative form carrying a commanding meaning emerging as the most dominant finding. This study concludes that the use of indirect imperative sentences in the utterances of the characters in the anime serves as a linguistic politeness strategy to soften the intent of work instructions in order to maintain social harmony among the restaurant employees.
