Abstract
Dialogue in anime films does not merely function as a narrative device but also serves as a medium for representing emotional expressions, social relationships, and linguistic politeness among characters. This study aims to describe the forms of expressive speech acts and the realization of politeness maxims in the anime film Look Back (ルックバック), adapted from the work of Tatsuki Fujimoto. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with a pragmatic approach. The data consisted of characters’ utterances containing expressive speech acts. The data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques, while the data analysis was conducted using Searle’s theory of expressive speech acts and Leech’s theory of politeness maxims through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal 45 instances of expressive speech acts, including praising, criticizing, thanking, complaining, blaming, apologizing, and congratulating. The most dominant type of expressive speech act is praising. The realization of politeness maxims appears in the forms of compliance and violation, with compliance occurring more frequently than violation. The approbation maxim is the most dominantly realized maxim in the characters’ utterances. These findings indicate that expressive speech acts in the anime film Look Back function as a means of expressing the characters’ feelings while also reflecting linguistic politeness in character interactions.
