STUDI KASUS STRATEGI KOMUNIKASI MAHASISWA DALAM BERBAHASA JEPANG

Abstract

This study analyzes students' communication strategies in Japanese when facing limitations in vocabulary, grammar, and cultural understanding. This qualitative study, which employs a case study approach, involved three Japanese Language Education students who had participated in a one-year internship in Japan and possessed proficiency equivalent to JLPT N3. Data were collected through roleplay-based interviews and experiential documentation.

The results indicate that students employ various communication strategies, such as formal and functional reduction, compensation, appealing for assistance, paraphrase, achievement, and formal avoidance. Formal reduction emerged as the most dominant strategy because it was considered the most practical in work situations. Factors influencing the use of these strategies include limitations in vocabulary and grammar, work pressure, lack of comprehension regarding instructions, low self-confidence, and the need to maintain smooth communication. These strategies help students overcome language barriers and enhance communication effectiveness in the Japanese work environment
