Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze and explain the functions and contexts of directive speech acts in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team by Takeyuki Kanda and Umanosuke Iida. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data sources consisting of dialogues between characters. Data was collected using the Listening Method, Non-Participant Observation (SBLC), and Note-taking. Data analysis was conducted by classifying speech act functions based on the theories of George Yule (1996) and Yoko Hasegawa (2018), as well as by analyzing the context with Hymes (1972) SPEAKING theory. The results revealed 43 instances of direct directive speech acts consisting of five functions: command (meirei), request (irai), prohibition (kinshi), suggestion (jogen), and invitation (kanyu). The application of context theory demonstrates that factors such as rank hierarchy and situational urgency significantly influence the communication styles of characters on the battlefield.
