Abstract
Language serves as a means of conveying information and a medium for expressing the speaker's thoughts, attitudes, and emotions within a communicative context. Studies on speech acts in film media continue to develop within the field of pragmatics, particularly in animated films that present dialogues rich in conflict and emotional content. This study examines expressive illocutionary speech acts charged with emotion in the dialogues of the animated film Arisu to Teresu no Maboroshi Koujou by Mari Okada (2023). The study aims to describe the types of emotion represented through expressive utterances, identify their pragmatic forms, and analyze the role of situational context in determining illocutionary meaning. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with eighteen utterances collected through observation, note-taking, and documentation techniques, then analyzed using Searle's (1979) expressive speech act theory, Hymes's (1974) SPEAKING model, and Leech's (1993) politeness principles. The findings reveal that expressive speech acts in this film represent thirteen types of emotion, with love and anger each appearing most frequently in three data. Regarding pragmatic form, direct literal utterances are dominant (55.6%), followed by indirect (27.8%) and direct non-literal (16.7%) forms. Situational context proves decisive in shaping illocutionary meaning, as grammatically similar utterances can carry different expressive functions depending on participants, setting, and communicative purpose. This study concludes that emotionally charged expressive speech acts play a significant role in constructing character identity and propelling the film's narrative arc.
