ANALISIS SEMIOTIKA VISUAL TERHADAP MAKNA ONOMATOPE GIONGO DALAM MANGA “JIBAKU SHOUNEN HANAKO-KUN” VOL. 1 KARYA AIDAIRO
Abstract
This study examines the meanings of giongo onomatopoeia (擬音語) in the manga Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun Vol. 1 by AidaIro using Roland Barthes’ visual semiotics theory. Giongo onomatopoeia, which represents sounds produced by inanimate objects and natural phenomena, frequently appears in Japanese manga; however, it has received limited attention from the perspective of visual semiotics, particularly in the horror-fantasy genre. This research employs a qualitative descriptive-analytical method. Data were collected through the observation method and verified using the Japanese Onomatopoeia Dictionary by Ono Masahiro (2007). Of the 70 data identified and analyzed, 15 were selected as representative samples for analysis based on Barthes’ three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings reveal that giongo onomatopoeia not only represents sounds but also contributes to the construction of horror atmospheres, tension, and Japanese cultural values through typographic elements such as font size, thickness, and sound repetition. Furthermore, the study found that onomatopoeia sharing the same denotative meaning can generate different connotative meanings and myths depending on the visual context and situational setting of a scene. These findings highlight the importance of a semiotic approach in understanding and translating onomatopoeia in manga.
