This study examines the meaning and affective function of kanyouku (慣用句) in the lyrics of Back Number's album アンコール (Encore). Kanyouku are idiomatic expressions whose meaning cannot be understood merely from their constituent elements, and in song lyrics they serve to express emotion in a more poetic and profound way. This study applies Dedi Sutedi's theory for meaning analysis and Geoffrey Leech's theory for affective meaning and function, using a descriptive qualitative method. Data consist of lyric excerpts containing kanyouku, collected through documentation and note-taking techniques, with idiomatic meanings verified against Imidas 慣用句辞典 and Kotobank. The findings identify 20 kanyouku data across 17 songs, which undergo a shift in meaning from concrete to abstract, particularly those formed from body-part elements (胸, 耳, 目, 手, 口). All kanyouku were also found to carry an affective function in expressing the characters' emotions, such as longing, regret, and self-irony.
